In this age of heightened sensitivity to all things racial and political, things can really get silly.
In Michigan this week Republic presidential candidate Mitt Romney was referencing the location of his birth place and cracked that no one was asking him to produce a birth certificate. Soon partisan pundits were opining that he had really stepped in it? What??
Speaking of stepping in it, the craziest thing I saw this week was a photo of raw bacon strewn across the grass in a New York City park. Nearby a Muslim group was gathering for prayer on the last day of Ramadan, after a month of fasting. The bacon was perceived by some to be part of an act of hate against Muslims.
If we are to believe it, an anonymous caller said the three packs of pork were going bad in his trunk and he spread it out for scavenging animals, like raccoons and opossums.
People are flaunting their love of bacon with t-shirts, outrageous menu items are popping up featuring bacon and a new bacon food truck is on the scene in San Francisco, of all places!
I have recently developed a heightened sensitivity to this phenomenon of bacon-love. But bacon's involvement in a new kind of hate crime? That takes the cake!
