Earlier this year I made some suggestions for words that need to be banned, or at least used more sparingly--such as (like) iconic and epic.
I'm excited about seeing the new Les Mis film even though it is being billed as epic. I recently enjoyed a delicious Epic Burger in Chicago. These usages create unresolved conflict in my life. I really can't decide if I object to them or not.
I also suggested that some things should remain iconic--such as the Grand Canyon. And if one is viewing the Canyon for the first time and can't think of anything to say except amazing, that's okay in my book. Having seen the canyon, it truly is awesome in the literal sense of the word. Yes, I meant literally.
I have been reading about and hearing some new suggestions for banned words. As we approach the new year and are possibly thinking about some kind of fresh start, why not freshen up our language? Fresh start is actually (really?) pretty (quite?) trite (tired?). A new year to fail? Epically? Every word I use suddenly seems overused!
Speaking of that or having said that, resolutions should probably be banned. Rarely are they kept and they just lay another layer of guilt (a guilt trip) on all of us.
My license plate starts with the word BAN! Crazy! I have my own issues, but I really want to become the Queen of Ban. Having issues. Banned.
I say just saying occasionally, but when I'm called on it, I claim I'm just sayin' it ironically. Lame, I know. You know--this is difficult--but cleaning up always is. I will feel better in the end. And next year there will be new words to clear. Hopefully all references to going over any fiscal cliffs will have been expunged from the national conversation. I want to ban the word conversation, as well, as in "we need to have a conversation" about that.
Some of these annoying trending words do come and go. Not soon enough!
Join me in my campaign to think and write and speak more freshly, more consciously. Think outside the box! Not.
I want to hear from everyone who has looked at my ramblings recently. What words or phrases should you stop using? What words would you like to ban?
And not perfectly good words like moist and spatula which I referenced previously...
Thinking about language can only be a good thing--positive exercise?
Come on--I need help with this. Seriously.

Thanks to Olga's link, here are some of the worst of 2012, combined by one of the commenters. I'm only guilty on one count. I have been known to use artisanal:
Well, YOLO, so I literally need to write an amazeballs comment to flash all my artisanal cred while maintaining my adorkable image, even if it does drive you totes cray. I'm giving 110% here to keep this from being meh! And I'll tell ya, I'm seriously jelly of all those congressmen--if I were there, I'd be going all Gangnam Style on that fiscal cliff, yo! But since I'm not there, I can say teehee to some mommy por n while awaiting the inevitable zombie apocalypse from my parents' basement.
Yep, that's all 15. You can kill me now.

Other commenters include eclectic, plethora, horrific and it is what it is. (Guilty on all counts)
Others suggest: It's all good, bi-partisan and I'm like 'uh helLO!

ReplyDeleteAfter eliminating all the banned words, I may have to just be quiet for awhile. A year of meditation may be necessary.
