Birthday Bacon

I keep endeavouring (have been reading Jane Eyre--last month's book club selection) to achieve the leaner and the meaner, so starting again in earnest this summer, I have given up many things. I no longer put cream in my coffee. I take it strong and black and hairy. I rarely eat any grains or bread, and thus no buttered bread. And I never give in to my craving for a fresh apple fritter or refreshing key lime pie or a cooling root beer float. Basically, I have been eating low-carb again--paleo, caveman, ice-age.

But this week was my birthday and I thought I should indulge myself just a little.

So when I went out for dinner with friends on birthday eve in Grand Haven, I indulged--not by ordering bread or potatoes or dessert, but by having bacon. My friends didn't help me enough with the fries, and I did nibble on a few, but otherwise the meal was low-carb friendly, if a little excessive. I washed it down with one lite beer.

Then on the night of my birthday, Marissa ordered this take-out steak for me that came with a loaded baked potato--and I indulged again. I washed the ribeye down with a modest Columbia Crest Two Vines cab, which went down real smooth.

The husband said, "who's Mr. Rose?!" lol

Son-in-law S. had recently tried the new bacon sundae from Burger King and agreed that we all should try it--so after our steaks settled, we all piled into the Avalon and went out for sundaes. Burger King has a new digital menu board with changing images of color-saturated and tempting options:

But alas! The bacon on the sundae tasted like it had been overcooked and burned to a crisp yesterday and then had sat out in rancid grease for a day! How utterly disappointing. Marissa and I turned them in for plain hot fudge sundaes, which went down really smoothly. I don't know if I dare to try the bacon sundae ever again. It left me with a bad taste in my mouth for bacon and for Burger King, now forever seared into that memory board that is attached to my tongue.

So when it comes to bacon and birthdays and bad diet days all I can say is that you win a few and you lose a few; however, I will lose too few if I don't just give up on bacon altogether! It might not be a bad idea to also just skip birthdays from now on. Endeavouring to lose some weight? Not giving up just yet!

Okay, what the hay. Here's a photo of me smiling over my yet untasted Burger King bacon sundae:
